Spotlight on Summer Uni 2008
In 2008, for the first time, there were 32 Summer Unis in London offering over 40,000 course places for young people across London. To document this landmark Summer Uni Spotlight 2008 is twice as big as last year's edition.
Summer Uni Spotlight uses the words and images of young people who attended Summer Uni courses and of the Summer Uni Co-ordinators to offer a unique insight into what has been achieved through the Summer Uni network. There are updates from the Co-ordinators on future plans and quotes from young people attending the courses. The design was developed from the images created by young people on a Summer Uni Graphic Design Course.
With the press endlessly reporting on youth crime, bullying, obesity, gangs and so on, we want to show you the flip side of the negative perceptions of young people. From our experience, young people are engaged, passionate, talented and willing to volunteer. Young people just want something that’s fun, inspiring and useful in life. They want to be treated with respect and be helped on the road to employment.
Summer Uni Spotlight captures the views of young people who enrol on Summer Uni courses voluntarily, not because they have to attend. It celebrates the hard work and dedication of the people behind Summer Uni, whose year-round efforts often go unnoticed. Furthermore, it provides a feel for the diverse courses that take place throughout the summer, ranging from Animal Care and Husbandry to Caribbean Cookery and Golf to Maya 3D Animation.
Our thanks go to all the young people interviewed and photographed and those on the design course, the Summer Uni Co-ordinators for arranging the visits, the photographers - Niki Sianni, Nicky Dracoulis and Tara Moore - and the Summer Uni London team for visiting all 32 Summer Unis.
