Useful Organisations


City Challenge

Partnership between the DCFS, Schools and Local Authorities to raise educational standards in London, the Black Country and Greater Manchester. Also the commissioning body for Summer Uni London.


The Jack Petchey Foundation

Grant making foundation and major funder of the Summer Uni grants.


London Councils

London Councils work to help member councils deliver better services, and to promote better cross-borough and pan-London working.


London Youth

London Youth is a network of almost 400 youth organisations serving young people across the capital.


Greater London Authority

The GLA is a unique form of strategic citywide government for London. It is made up of a directly elected Mayor - the Mayor of London - and a separately elected Assembly - the London Assembly.

Every Child Matters

Every Child Matters: Change for Children is the approach to the well-being of children and young people from birth to age 19.


Youth Matters

Youth Matters sets out proposals designed to improve outcomes for 13-19-year-olds.


14-19 Reforms

Transformations to learning for 14-19 year olds including introduction of the diplomas to run alongside GCSEs and A-levels.


Positive Activities

Positive Activities for Young People (PAYP) at risk of social exclusion and community crime.


Extended Schools

A key way of delivering Every Child Matters outcomes, an extended school works with local providers, agencies (and other schools) to provide access to a core offer of services and support to young people.


Education and Inspections Act 2006

Act of parliament putting responsibility for positive leisure-time activities for young people with Local Education Authorities.

Accreditation

Below are links to organisations which you may find useful for gaining accreditation for your Summer Uni and courses. More details on accreditation can be found in the Summer Uni Manual.


The Duke of Edinburgh's Award

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is a voluntary, non-competitive and flexible programme of cultural and adventurous activities for all young people, whatever their background or ability.


QiSS

QiSS (Quality in Study Support) aims to support schools, local authorities and other educational organisations in raising students' achievement, motivation and self esteem.


Open College Network

The National Open College Network provides national qualifications and programmes in a wide range of subject areas and offers a local accreditation service, through eleven regional Open College Networks, that provides recognition of achievement through the award of credit.


ASDAN

ASDAN is a curriculum development organisation and an internationally recognised awarding body, which grew out of research work at the University of the West of England in the 1980s. ASDAN offers a wide range of curriculum programmes and qualifications for all abilities, mainly in the 11-25 age group.


Sport Leaders UK

Sports Leader Awards use the medium of sport to help people learn essential skills such as working with and organising others, as well as motivational, communication and teamwork skills. A Sports Leader Award is a nationally recognised qualification and a passport to future employment or education.


AQA

The Assessment and Qualifications Alliance (AQA) is the largest of the three English exam boards. They set and mark public exams such as GCSEs and A Levels, as well as other qualifications.


Arts Award

The Arts Award is an accreditation which supports young artists and young arts leaders and leads to accreditation at levels 1, 2 and 3.
