Youth Advisory Groups
What is a Youth Advisory Group?
Youth Advisory Groups ensure that Summer Uni programmes are attractive and relevant to young people. Its members comprise of young people who have attended Summer Uni in previous years and some who have never attended.
They meet regularly, leading the meetings, making decisions on courses, advising on publicity, venues and marketing strategies. They plan and host annual events and assist with organizing seminars and events during the summer.
Youth advisory groups often network with other youth forums and have the chance to comment on issues involving them and their community around them. These views can sometimes be taken to Councillors and Ministers.
Youth Advisory Groups help organizations get a real understanding of young people's views.
Is there an age limit?
Ages vary, but to be a youth advisor you will usually be between 13-25 years old.
Do I receive training and accreditation?
We do encourage Summer Unis to offer training which sometimes is accredited. Training would generally include how to write minutes and chair meetings, team work, equal opportunities, dealing with conflict, customer care, interpersonal skills, disability awareness and marketing.
Sometimes you may be able to receive accreditation, which is usually through London Open College Network (LOCN), or the Assessment and Qualifications Alliance (AQA). Throughout the process you will be supported by the Summer Uni or activity provider. If you would like accreditation you will need to find out if your Summer Uni or activity provider caters for this.
